We visited the Fondation Maeght – a modern art museum in the heart of the French Riviera

Odwiedziliśmy Fondation Maeght – muzeum sztuki nowoczesnej w sercu Lazurowego Wybrzeża

Our recent visit to the French Riviera turned out to be a real journey into the world of contemporary art, nature and architecture. We had the opportunity to visit the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, one of the most important museums of contemporary art in Europe. This unique place amazed us not only with its unique collection, but also with the way in which art interacts with the natural landscape and architecture.

The interview with Konrad Wedekind was conducted by Patrycja

From artwork to make-up: how does Fondation Maeght inspire creative work?

PH
What was your first impression when you entered the Fondation Maeght? Was there anything that particularly surprised you?
KW

My first impression was that the place has an almost mystical atmosphere. Fondation Maeght surrounds you with peace and quiet from the moment you enter, allowing you to focus on the art and the surrounding nature. I was surprised by the harmony between the building, the gardens and the artwork. Every element seems to have its place here, as if art and nature were part of a single, coherent vision.

PH
Is there a particular work or artist at the Fondation Maeght that has made a particular impression on you? What is it that makes these works stick in your mind?
KW

Definitely the work of Joan Miró. His sculptures in the gardens of the Fondation Maeght seem to come alive in their natural surroundings. The colours and shapes he chose work perfectly with the greenery and light of the south of France. His works convey a certain joy of life and lightness that are perfect for this place. I think Miró understood how to combine his artistic visions with nature in a way that is truly extraordinary.

PH
Did your visit to Fondation Maeght influence your approach to creating new products?
KW

Yes, definitely. Fondation Maeght showed me how important it is to create a space where art can exist in harmony with nature and architecture. I understood that our products can become more than just cosmetics – we want them to be something special, almost like works of art. We believe that makeup, like art, should inspire and evoke positive emotions.

PH
Can we expect collaborations with artists or cultural initiatives from Bikor Makeup?
KW

We have already had several such collaborations, the last one on the occasion of the brand's 25th anniversary, when we created a limited edition of the packaging for our bestseller Egyptian Land with illustrator Ola Niepsuj. We are very interested in the idea of interpenetration of different worlds, such as art, fashion, makeup. We believe that the future of the cosmetics industry lies not only in products, but also in the emotions and impressions that we can provide to our customers.

PH
Thanks for the interview, Konrad! We can't wait to see your new projects!
KW

Thank you! It was a pleasure. And I can't wait to share my ideas! For those who want to see the results of my visit, I have prepared a small gallery in this post. I invite you to watch!

Architecture of the Fondation Maeght
The architecture of the museum is the work of Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert , who designed the space to be integrated with the surrounding nature.

Large windows, subtle lines and open spaces make the interior of the museum filled with natural light. The building fits perfectly into the picturesque landscape of the French Riviera , which further emphasizes the unique character of this institution.

Masterpieces of contemporary art

The permanent collection of the Fondation Maeght is a real treasure for lovers of modern art. Its collection includes works by masters such as Marc Chagall and Alberto Giacometti , whose works represent the essence of 20th century art. Marc Chagall is represented by paintings full of symbolism and emotion, while Giacometti's sculptures, known for their slender forms, add mysticism to the museum space. The Fondation Maeght also organizes regular temporary exhibitions presenting works by contemporary artists. In recent years, visitors have been able to admire works by artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Yayoi Kusama , whose exhibitions are real feasts for the senses. Eliasson's installations, which combine light, water and space, allow viewers to interact with works of art on a completely new level. The exhibition of Yayoi Kusama , with her characteristic dot patterns and mirror reflections, introduces the viewer to a fascinating world of infinity, which attracts both art lovers and novices.

Museum Guide

If you are planning a visit to the French Riviera , Fondation Maeght is a place worth including in your plans. The museum is located just 30 minutes from Nice , making it easily accessible for tourists visiting the south of France. Walking around the museum grounds, you can admire art in a unique setting, and the visit becomes a real experience for the body and mind.

Joan Miró's garden at the Fondation Maeght

The Joan Miró Garden at Fondation Maeght is an extraordinary space where art meets nature. Designed by the artist himself, the garden is full of colorful sculptures and organic forms that refer to Miró's distinctive style. Every corner of this magical place is thought out, making walking through the garden feel like an interactive outdoor art gallery. The variety of plants, combined with creative installations, create an atmosphere of inspiration, encouraging reflection on the relationship between art and nature. It is an ideal place for lovers of both art and the beauty of the surrounding world.

Museum, nature and contemporary art

Fondation Maeght is not just a museum – it is a unique combination of art, nature and architecture. Its picturesque location on the French Riviera makes it a place that inspires and delights. For lovers of contemporary art, but also for those who appreciate the beauty of nature and exceptional architecture, a visit to Fondation Maeght is a must-see on the map of travel in southern France.
